The 2014 Artisan Awards is the Eras of Bollywood

While for most of us, jewellery is synonymous with heavy wedding pieces or temple jewellery, the the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council of India (GJEPC) is pushing the best in jewellery design to the forefront of innovation with the Artisan Jewellery Design Awards 2014.

More than 800 entries later, the panel of judges — including designer Payal Singhal, Vogue India’s editor Priya Tanna, architect and interior designer Ashiesh Shah, Shimul Mehta Vyas from the National Institute of Design and Shanoo Bijlani, managing editor of Solitaire International and Adorn magazines — have narrowed it down to 40 contestants at the first round of judging last week. The winner will be announced this December at an event at the Grand Hyatt, Mumbai.  “Design is the core of creativity.

It’s really stunning to see some of the breathtaking designs interestingly decoded on paper. I feel this is an incredible platform by GJEPC for promising designers to showcase their talent,” says Singhal. The theme this year is Bollywood, and entries must draw design inspiration from and use stones and metals influenced by one of four film eras: Monochromatic Magic (the black and white era and the first talkies, including Raja Harishchandra), Golden Glory (the golden era of cinema, including Mother India), Colourama (masala films era, including Sholay) and The Avant Garde (contemporary films, including Queen).

Ten designers have been shortlisted for each category. “Visual appeal over creativity and wearable aspects are what I considered while selecting the pieces… The participants have very innovatively brought in movie allusions through their designs,” says Shah, one of the other judges. The winner in each category will receive a prestigious internship with a leading jewellery house and a cash prize. Runners-up will also receive a cash prize.  With Bollywood as its muse, we expect nothing short of luxurious decadence, bright colours and unique designs.
