Plagiarism Or Inspiration? Aishwarya Rai’s Cover Shoot Accused Of Copying

We all have our favourite designers, photographers, and makeup artists that we follow religiously. We see their work as inspiration and something to aspire towards. But, there is a fine line between being inspired and outright copying the work of people in the creative space.

It looks like designer duo, Falguni Shane Peacock, might have inadvertently crossed that line with the first cover of their new print magazine Peacock. With the beautiful Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as the cover star, the cover was called out by popular Instagram plagiarism watch dog Diet Sabya.

As you can see, the post features two collages, one of British actress Kate Winslet and the other of American actress, Julia Roberts. Both women are posing for the cover of iconic fashion magazine Harper’s Bazaar. The first thing we notice is that Kate and Aishwarya are both seen to be balancing delicately on a ladder with the skyscrapers of New York City as a background. With Kate, we can clearly see the Empire State Building but with Aishwarya, we’re not so sure which building is in the backdrop as it is too close to the frame. However, we can see that in this comparison, Diet Sabya sees the concept of a woman balancing on a ladder with NYC in the backdrop as plagiarism.

In the next photo, we can see Julia climbing a rocky cliff face in a pink, layered tulle gown, which is just screaming couture. Aishwarya’s red gown is similarly layered but has feather detailing instead of tulle. It looks like in this case, Diet Sabya sees the gowns as similar enough to be considered a case of plagiarism. Other photos from the cover shoot were of Aishwarya walking the streets of NYC in beautiful couture, which the former beauty queen and actress shared on her own Instagram.

September is an important month for the fashion world as it marks the start of a new season–Autumn-Winter. Summer clothes go back into the closet and out come the chic coats, gowns, and boots for the winter and all its festivity from Thanksgiving to Christmas. However, in India, September also marks the beginning of the bridal and festive season. Diwali, Christmas, New Years’ Eve… and the myriad other festivals celebrated across the country. This is when fashion magazines amp up on the couture and Indianwear coverage as people are attending weddings and parties almost every evening. Shane himself shared two videos of Aishwarya from the cover shoot on his Instagram.

We can all agree that the photoshoot was beautiful but what do you think about the allegations of plagiarism? Do you think this was creative inspiration or downright copying?
