Kajal’s big break in Tollywood was through the period piece “Magadheera”, starring Ram Charan Teja. Kajal played dual roles in the big-budget project by SS Rajamouli which went on to become a blockbuster. Soon, the actress was among the A-list heroines in the Telugu industry, a position she has continued to keep.
In Kollywood, Kajal’s early films were “Pazhani”, “Bommalattam” and “Saroja”, none of which did much for her career. In 2010, she was cast as leading lady in the Karthi-starrer “Naan Mahaan Alla” and that marked her arrival as a top heroine in the Tamil industry as well.
In Telugu, Kajal continued to enjoy success in films such as Prabhas starrers “Darling” and “Mr Perfect”. “Brindaavanam” won her a best actress award.
In 2011, Kajal returned to Bollywood in the cop story “Singham” starring Ajay Devgn in the title role. It was a hero-centric film, but Kajal got noticed for her performance.
In fact, Kajal wasn’t at all deterred by the fact that many of the South films were hero-centric. In Mahesh Babu’s 2012 film “Businessman”, too, she had a limited role, but rode the success wave, thanks to the film becoming a super hit.
In 2012 Kajal had another big hit in “Thuppakki”, in which she played Vijay’s romantic interest. The Diwali release was the first Kollywood film to enter the Rs 100 crore-club.
Kajal also starred in Suriya’s Diwali 2012 release “Maattrran”. The film didn’t fare as expected, but Kajal’s star status was intact.
Kajal had a great run in 2013, especially in Tollywood. She featured in “Naayak”, alongside Ram Charan Teja and Amala Paul, and the film was a box-office hit. She was also NTR Jr’s heroine in the commercially successful “Baadshah” and strengthened her position as a glamorous A-list actress.
