After delivering one of the best performances of the year in the blockbuster hit Oopiri, Akkineni Nagarjuna will be next seen in the mythological film Om Namo Venkatesaya. The movie is based on the life of Hathiram Baba, a saint from North India who settled in Tirumala around 1500 CE and was a huge devotee of Lord Venkateshwara. The movie also stars Anushka Shetty in the female lead, while Vimala Raman, Jagapathi Babu and Praya Jaiswal play other important roles in the movie.
Hindi television actor, Saurabh Raj Jain known for his role as Lord Krishna in the serial Jai Shree Krishna and Mahabharat, as well as Lord Vishnu in Devon Ke Dev…Mahadev , will be playing Lord Venkateswara in the movie. Om Namo Venkatesaya is directed by veteran film-maker K. Raghavendra Rao, with music composed by M M Keeravani. The teaser of the movie has landed, and it looks Telugu cinema’s new attempt to cash in on the success of Baahubali and Rudhramadevi (both of which starred Anushka Shetty, who seems to have made this genre her forte). However unlike the other two movies, which had a bigger scale when it comes to set designs and special effects, there is something lacking in Om Namo Venkatesaya.
The entire feel of the movie from the trailer feels like some mythological show we see on television, so it kind of jars especially when we have already seen better effects on television. It also doesn’t help matters much that Saurabh Raj Jain is cast as the God, so you feel like you are watching another episode of Jai Shree Krishna, albeit dubbed in Telugu. However, one cannot find any fault with the lead actor Nagarjuna who continues his golden run of performances we had seen in Manam and Oopiri. It’s also good to see him try various genres and excelling in them. Anushka Shetty should actually take a break from these period dramas and do some urbane movies more.
Here’s the teaser for Om Namo Venkatesaya…
