Aishwarya Rai makes her return to Cannes Film Festival with her daughter

A year ago, her appearance at the Cannes Film Festival was marred by cruel jibes about her post-pregnancy weight. But Bollywood beauty Aishwarya Rai hasn’t let the comments ruin her experience at the event, cutting a slender figure as she returned to the world-famous film festival for her twelfth consecutive year.

The 39-year-old star clutched her 18-month-old daughter Aaradhya as the pair touched down at Nice airport for the festival on Friday.Aishwarya looked sleek in an all-black outfit with yellow accessories as she toted her little girl, who wore a pair of red and white polkadot trousers and a pink cardigan.

Aaradhya, who was nicknamed Beti B by fans as Aishwarya and her husband Abhishek Bachchan took six months to name their daughter, looked somewhat overwhelmed by the attention as she travelled through the airport with her mother. Speaking previously about becoming a partner, Aishwarya said: ‘(Motherhood) is wonderful. You ask the question and I beam!’It’s splendid… It’s inexplicable. The joy, the bliss, is wonderful. A smile from my daughter and that’s it! She’s good. She’s great.’

The actress will no doubt be hoping her appearance at this year’s festival will be less controversial than the last.In 2012, an unfortunate photograph that captured the actress with a double chin sparked a flurry of cruel criticism, with some suggesting that she had a ‘duty’ to her fans to regain her pre-pregnancy figure. One website posted a video of the star looking less than her usual svelte self, flicking between photographs of her pre-birth, and post pregnancy.

Called ‘Aishwarya Rai’s shocking weight gain’, the clip came accompanied by elephant sound effects.Dozens more videos in a similar vein were then posted, each with viewing figures in the tens or hundreds of thousands.Comments left after the video prove that many of those watching had little sympathy for the star.’She is a Bollywood actress and it is her duty to look good and fit,’ one said.Another added: ‘She needs to learn from people like Victoria Beckham who are back to size zero weeks after their delivery.’

Aishwarya remained cool-headed about the criticism, and was open about the fact that she was in no hurry to lose the few extra pounds she gained during her pregnancy, adding that she simply wants to ‘enjoy motherhood’.The stunning actress, once called the world’s most beautiful woman, is in Cannes to be the guest of honour at an event on Sunday evening celebrating 100 years of Indian cinema.
