The festivals of celebrating the birth anniversaries of Gurus in Sikhism are known as ‘Gurpurabs’. Guru Nanak Jayanti is a holy festival of celebrating birth anniversary of the famous Sikh guru, Guru Nanak. Born in 1469 A.D, Guru Nanak is a sacred and dear personality for Sikhs. He is known to be the founders of Sikhism. According to the Indian calendar Guru Nanak was born on the 14th of kartik.

However, the birthday of Guru Nanak falls between the months of October to November according to the Gregorian calendar.  Hindus have great respect and love for their religious personalities. And their birth anniversaries set the whole country commemorating. Guru Nanak was a spiritualist, a saint. He preached the concept of one god and believed that Hindus and Muslims should not be separated by religious belief and should follow one god.

Guru Nanak Jayanti is a three day festival that is celebrated with devotion and enthusiasm. Guru Nanak Jayanti begins with all the rhymes and recitation of the Holy book of Sikhs, then as a gesture of peace and happiness, free sweets distributed among people who are or aren’t part of the celebration. Food is cooked in bulk specially to treat the people and this service is carried by men, women and children, thus anybody who wants to play a role in serving humanity on this holy occasion. This whole activity is known as ‘karseva’. Also people pay special visits to the Gurdwaras on this occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti, where special programs such as displaying sword skills and martial art performances are organized to entertain the people. The holy places around the world, houses and streets are lit up to rejoice the festival of Guru Nanak Jayanti.

Guru Nanak Jayanti is celebrated around the world by Sikhs in the loving memory of their beloved Guru Nanak. Rhymes, based on the honorable stories from the life of Guru Nanak, are sung by the people as they revive the teachings of Guru Nanak. Other than these traditional ways of celebration, people now exchange special inspirational messages on Guru Nanak Jayanti.  This year Guru Nanak Jayanti will be celebrated with zest on November 10. The preparations to relive the pious verve of Guru Nanak are well underway.
